Why your child’s AAC should never be switched off

Most software can be paused, cancelled, or left to lapse without much harm. An AAC app is different. It is how a person says they are hungry, or scared, or that something hurts. This guide explains why a communication tool should never be gated behind a payment that can fail, and what to look for so your child’s voice stays with them.

An AAC app is not ordinary software

When a streaming service lapses, you miss a few films. When a communication app stops working, a person loses the way they tell you what they need. For someone who is non-speaking, the app is not a convenience or an extra. It is their voice, and a voice is not something that should ever depend on a card payment going through.

That is the heart of the issue. The features can be excellent and the design can be beautiful, but if the whole thing can be switched off remotely, the person using it is never quite standing on solid ground.

The trust problem with subscription-only AAC

Some AAC apps are sold as a subscription, charging a monthly or yearly fee. A subscription can make an app cheaper to start with, and for some families the maths works well. The worry is what a subscription implies: that access is conditional and ongoing, and that a missed renewal, an expired card, a change of circumstances, or a price rise could leave a person without their words.

Picture the real moments. A card expires while you are on holiday. A payment bounces during a hard month. A company changes its plans or closes. In each case, the person who relies on the app has done nothing wrong, yet their ability to communicate is suddenly at risk. That is a lot of trust to place in a billing system.

This is not a claim that subscription apps are bad or that their makers do not care. Many are made by thoughtful teams. It is simply that a subscription is the wrong shape for the one piece of software a person cannot afford to lose.

What should I look for instead?

You do not have to avoid paid apps to protect your child’s voice. You just want to know that the core ability to speak cannot be taken away. A few things are worth checking before you choose.

• Speech that keeps working offline, so a lost connection never means a lost voice, at home, at school, or out of signal.
• Speech that keeps working if a plan lapses. Paid extras can pause, but the ability to communicate should not.
• A one-off or lifetime option, so there is a way to own the tool outright rather than rent it indefinitely.
• Data you can export. If you can take your words and boards with you, you are never locked in, and your child’s vocabulary is never held hostage.
