A voice is not a subscription feature
If a streaming subscription lapses, you lose films. If some AAC subscriptions lapse, a child loses words. The principle Sayella is built on, and a plea to the rest of the industry.
Imagine your child uses an app to speak. Not to play, not to learn shapes. To speak. To say "I want more", "it hurts", "I love you".
Now imagine a card expires.
In too many AAC apps, what happens next is unconscionable: the app stops speaking until the payment clears. The words are still there, greyed out, held. A child who said "help" yesterday cannot say it today because a billing system said so.
Why this happens
Subscriptions are not evil. Cloud sync costs real money every month. Voice licensing costs money. Support costs money. A fair subscription funds fair ongoing costs, and Sayella has one too.
The line gets crossed when the thing behind the paywall is the speech itself. That decision is always framed gently, "your subscription has expired, renew to continue", but strip the interface language away and the mechanism is: this child's voice is collateral for a payment.
The test every AAC app should pass
Ask one question of any communication app: if the family never pays again, can the person still speak?
In Sayella the answer is yes, permanently, by design. The free tier is not a trial. Speech works offline, forever. If a Premium subscription lapses, cloud extras pause and every word keeps working. We wrote this into the product before we wrote the prices, and we published it on our pricing page where it can be held against us.
And because promises from app developers are cheap: your boards export in the Open Board Format, readable by other AAC apps. If Sayella ever betrays this principle, you can leave, and take every word with you. Lock-in is the enabler of bad pricing. We removed ours on purpose.
To fellow AAC builders
This is not a competitive attack, it is an invitation. Charge for sync. Charge for voices. Charge for teams, analytics, AI, whatever costs you money to run. But put speech below the paywall line, permanently, and say so in writing. The families we serve have enough that can go wrong in a week without their child's voice being one of them.
My daughter Isla is nonverbal and autistic. I built Sayella for her, and this principle is the reason it exists rather than just another subscription. Every voice deserves to be heard, and no voice should have an expiry date.
