Week one, out loud: an honest launch diary

We said we would build Sayella in the open, so here is what the first week actually looked like. Not the launch-week montage, the real one.

The approval

Apple approved Sayella on a Wednesday morning. There is a particular kind of quiet after you press Release for something you built for your own child. My daughter Isla is nonverbal and autistic, and this app exists because of her, so the moment was less "we are live" and more "right, now it has to be good enough".

The bugs found us fast

Within a day of using the live app on a phone rather than a test device, we found things that never showed up in testing. The onboarding buttons could slide off the bottom of a smaller iPhone screen. The board editor squeezed seven columns onto a screen built for four, so the labels leaked out of their boxes. Tapping a button made the phone vibrate, which some children find unpleasant and some find fascinating, and neither is what a communication tap should do.

All of it was fixed and shipped within a day, and the app now speaks even when the phone's silent switch is on, because a communication device should never be muted by a ring switch. If you had asked me before launch whether the app was ready, I would have said yes. Launch teaches you what testing cannot: real families, real devices, real thumbs.

The part nobody warns you about

The App Store takes time to trust a new app. Screenshots lag in search results, reviews take days to appear, and the first emails you send from a month-old domain land in spam folders. None of this means anything is wrong. It means you are new. If you are a fellow builder reading this: expect the lag, spread your emails out, and phone the local paper instead of waiting.

The people who showed up

The first downloads were friends, and I will not pretend otherwise. The message I sent them said "leave an honest rating if you rate it", and watching people I have known for years poke around an app built for my daughter was stranger and lovelier than I expected. The reviews from people I have never met are the milestone I am watching for now. When the first one lands, it goes in the next diary.

What is next

The next update adds a gentle in-app way to leave reviews, honest store metadata tweaks, and the groundwork for the web version. The printables stay free, the speech stays free, and the diary will keep being honest, including when the numbers are small. They are small. Every app you have ever heard of started at small.
